Michael Schuster: Dark brick red; a fine, sweet, and mushroomy bouquet but, to judge by this bottle anyway, beginning to dry out on the palate. Still ripe fruit aplenty and excellent, sweet length, but a distractingly dry and chewily tannic texture in the middle, so a rather uneven mouthful if you like. Intensity, yes; harmony, no. A tough (!) prospect after the beauty of the 1955. Very satisfying with breast of pigeon, but one wants to be able to enjoy wines of this reputation (and price) entirely on their own as well. Its tannin will keep it, but it’s likely to remain dominated by its astringent sinews. I admire rather than enjoy it. Now to 25+. ?
