Michael Schuster: Dark mahogany; strong, sweet, cassis, mineral, and wet-wool nose; a palate that still has a remarkable concentration of ripe fruit, still a great deal of tannin, and more acidity than either the ’59 or ’61. Sweet, slightly tarry fruit tinged with the ethyl-acetate warmth of volatility, and still superb length. Impressive, especially for its eight decades, but not the textural finesse of more recent great years. Doubtless its fruit will still seduce at its century! Now until 2029—at least. 17.5 if we must offer a score, but I don’t think this is a useful number for such heart and vigor at such an age; we are looking at history at least as much as harmony.
