Richard Mayson: Very deep mahogany color, still with a glint of red. Rich, smoky aromas, still quite dense and showing the ripeness of the vintage; it may merely have been a reflection of the stage we were at in the tasting, but did I get a whiff of potato then cotton candy? Very rich and voluptuous in style, with licorice and dark chocolate, still structured and tannic, but a bit coarse and clumsy on the finish. Even now, a very interesting wine that must have started its life as tannic blackstrap! 16.5
