Michael Schuster: Dark red, narrow-rimmed; barely any maturity at 12 years; dense and relatively closed to smell, but with an emerging blackberry and black-cherry fruit and a subtle complexity, promising a fine bouquet. Rich, fairly concentrated, yet typically elegant middleweight, still with a firm tannin but no asperity; long, concentrated, even, with a noticeable mid-palate complexity and tenacity; a lovely sweetness of licorice fruit, a gentle pepperiness, and a clear subtlety of flavor, too, followed by excellent aromatic and fruit length. A very fine, gently muscular Vargellas, just starting to drink nicely but clearly with decades to go, and a finer bouquet and silkier texture to come. Now to 2025+ (July 2007). 17.5
