Michael Schuster: One of 34 pipes, unusually bottled separately in the same year as a “declared” Taylor’s Vintage. This was a commemorative wine, a farewell to the “low” vines (below the railway line) that were about to be flooded by the damming of the River Douro. Pale, fully mature ruby; a bouquet with a distinct mintiness and licorice above the dried fig; medium-full, quite fleshy, and with a very light, almost fully integrated tannin; a broader, fuller fruitiness and a softer, looser, less aromatic quality than most Vargellas, characteristic perhaps of the hot, low vineyards, but also of the 1970 vintage character. Most attractive; well into its plateau of maturity (July 2007). 16
