Stephen Brook: Opaque red. Sumptuous and lavish oaky nose, sensuous and beguiling. Broad, plump, concentrated, luxurious, but supported by massive tannins—yet it’s not too extracted or dense. Complex, with ample spice and vigor to keep it lively rather than heavy. Certainly not a classic style, and in terms of weight and power, it goes for broke—so it may not please everybody. But it does please me. 18.5
Andrew Jefford: Dark purple-red with some opacity. Warm, sweet-fruited, even peach-fruited. A touch of smoke; a touch of incense, too. Attractive, and with far more to offer in terms of aromatic detail than many of its peers. Dense, rich, close-textured, intense. The vintage is apparent in the insistent acidity that remains the central structuring force on the palate, but there is an aromatic power on the palate also, which is unusual this year. The tannic wealth and mid-palate richness are subdued. 15.5
Michael Schuster: Very ripe fruit to smell; rich, dense, tannic wine. At present, the dry, new-oak texture overwhelms what is clearly a very ripe fruit; alcohol shows in the warmth of its finish. It will clearly need years to absorb its tannin, and I’m not sure the fruit will outdistance the wood! Good, but currently a tough prospect! 16?
