Andrew Jefford: Deep, clear black-red in color. Sweet, warm, refined; a touch resinous. That sense of warm brush or bush in high summer perhaps takes the lead over the graceful, subtle fruits, but both elements are there, nonetheless. There is some spice to shake over the melange, too. It’s done with real delicacy and all adds up to a considerable invitation to sip. On the palate, by contrast, this is a little salty, dry, and sinewy—young Pinot in an ideal world should have a very full lower lip and a fleshiness that time will steal only slowly. The wine is still serious, round-contoured, and graceful, and it’s made by someone who understands Pinot very well. I love its overall poise and gathered force, and the concentration is everything one might want. Perhaps a challenging vintage for the vineyard? Australia? 15
Anthony Rose: Good youthful medium-ruby hue; attractively fresh and intense berry fruit fragrance, with some underlying earthy characters, along Burgundian-style forest-floor lines. There’s some deeply satisfying, concentrated red-fruit opulence on the mid-palate, with well-integrated sweet, spicy vanillin oak, a seductively juicy textural quality, and behind it the backbone and structure and personality to carry this wine into middle age and beyond. An excellent expression of its terroir. Australia. 18
Joanna Simon: Deep color. Clean, pure, well-defined fruit (black fruit) on the nose, though currently still too heavily framed by oak, but the oak should start to take a backseat. Ripe black-cherry fruit, with some savory black olive and well-integrated oak on the palate. Supple and mouth-filling, with a silky texture. High alcohol. Just a little more precision would be good. New Zealand? 16
