Tim Atkin: Mid-ruby/red. Some development at the rim. Some reduction on the nose and palate, which gives the tannins a metallic edge. Some whole-bunch? Savory, slightly stemmy undertone that doffs its hat to the Rhône. A little funky and Bretty, but I like the savory complexity 16
Stephen Brook: Opaque red. Sweet cherry-jam nose but not that overripe. Broad and soft, but backed by some light tannins that keep it from seeming bland or flabby. Has good weight of fruit, though it’s not very nuanced. There’s a chocolaty tone, too, but it’s a wine that jabs at the palate rather than persuades it with a more balanced and harmonious tone. It’s juicy and enjoyable yet doesn’t make a huge impression. Medium length 14.5
Alex Hunt: Still fairly closed, but a bizarrely whitewine nose of apricot, lime leaf, and green tea. In a black glass, this could take me to Chassagne! Even the palate, since it is gentle on the tannin front, has a remarkable amount in common with serious white Burgundy— perhaps a little more bitter citrus and tar, but still the combination of herbs and a touch of reduction. I can’t help but like the wine, even if it’s utterly atypical. And yes, I appreciate this reads like an idiotic tasting note, but try it. You may be surprised 16
