Andrew Jefford: Deep, dark black-red in color. Brooding and earthy, with the same combination of dark clay slabbiness, warm black fruit, and pressed leaf that the Dame showed, though this has more lift, articulacy, and expansiveness. The class shows through—there is also a perfumed, cologne-like note, and some moist licorice… All very alluring, though this is an unopulent property in an unopulent year, so it’s modestly buttoned up and no cleavage showing. Some might object to the pressed leaf; some might love its implied freshness. On the palate, this is dark, full, energetic, perhaps a little less richly textured than I was expecting but every bit as detailed and rewarding. The tannins are very fine-grained, but packed with flavor, as is the discreet acidity; very much a seamless whole. You won’t have to wait an age for this, and you’ll never be disappointed, either: fine, classy, and classic. 2019–30. 94
Michael Schuster: Dense and closed on the nose, but a fine blackcurrant Cabernet clear, too; rich, elegant, firm in acidity, firm but fine in tannin, excellent term balance; freshly sweet in its cassis flavor, very mineral-infused, long and closegrained to taste, fleshy, subtle, very long across the palate, long and mineral, and blackcurrant fragrant to finish. Lovely Montrose, refined, classy, harmonious, complete. 2022–40+. 93
