SR | Lactic aromas open this 2019 Rangen Gewurz, which is otherwise pure, fresh, and stony on the precise nose, which also includes some oaky notes, but most of all just ripe mango and peach aromas, intertwined with rose-petal notes. Round and quite sweet on the palate (but moderately so), this is an extract-rich and intense, very dense and aromatic Rangen, with a long, savory, and stimulating finish. Still very young, but gifted with prodigious talents. 95
AJ | Mid-gold with gold glints. Fascinating aromas here: a kind of sweet marsh, packed with vanilla, jasmine, ginger, and ylang-ylang. Very impressive aromatic force, here; attention-commanding. Wonderful aromas in their heady richness: I could sniff this for half an hour. Lush, rich, sweet ... yet bitter, too, rasping, perfumed, an infusion of bitter orange peel and rose-essence; get the folks from Grasse on to this and they will find a world here. Astonishing wine from an astonishing site. I should stress that there is a freshness here, too, and the wine is not in any way physically syrupy, and indeed it doesn't seem to have a huge amount of sugars; it's just many of the flavors identify as sweet. Texturally it is thick and silky at the same time. This is an utterly astonishing wine which one could describe for hours and never do justice to, and the site is clearly unique and compelling. Up to the growers to do justice to it (as here). Wow! There are surely few wines in the world as aromatically saturated and provocative and allusive as this burning, fiery scented cross of a wine. Astonishing. Every drop is a treasure. 96
AR | Mid-gold in color, this is pleasantly floral in aroma, and rather overwhelmingly sweet and sickly when you taste it; yes, with some acidity, but with such cloying sweetness and alcohol that the whole thing just falls over. Sorry! 84
