AJ | Dark, opaque black-red; purple glints at the meniscus. Sweet, warm, lively and enticing aromas of vivid, plush, vanilla-and-cream-infused fruits and ample oak. A smoky touch, too,. It would be quite hard to diagnose the vintage from this proudly ultra-ripe aroma, but that may be an advantage for some. The vintage is palpable on the palate, though, by dint of very penetrating and searching acidity ... which is almost at odds with the lavish elevage and vanilla-cream--and-toast notes which help crank up the aromatic appeal. For me it is disconcerting and reduces the drinkability of this otherwise hugely impressive wine, and gives it a New World style. Almost inky tannins add to the concentration, drive and thrust. There is, though, a huge amount to enjoy here. Drink Dates: 2027 - 2037. 89
SF | Rich saturated ruby. Nose of plum skin, damson and quince; hints of verbena and cigar box. Peat and graphite. The palate boasts red and black fruit, pepper and licorice and a bed of finely-ground tannin. The fruit is a little stretched, leaner than anticipated and seemingly struggling to fit into the boarder structure. The finish tapers nicely however and reaches resolution in a satisfactory manner. Drink Dates: 2028 - 2034. 89
