Andrew Jefford: Appearance: Clear, bright red. Aroma: Clearly different to Echézeaux, and not as winningly or freshly fruited at this stage: broader, grainier, more composed, though less forthcoming. Creamed fruits; earth on the plow blade; savory. Flavor: On the palate, the fruits are grippier than for the Echézeaux, with more tannic ruffling. The acids, meanwhile, are a touch riper and grander: more girder and less spar. The tones embrace plum and lemon as well as raspberry, and a grating of citrus pith provides some mouthwatering bitterness toward the end. The wine has intensity, purity, and spice; there’s a juiciness, too, and a grainy depth. Sweet breaths, afterward, more than pure flavor length. 16.5
Michael Schuster: Denser to smell, clearly more matter than on the Echézeaux, a little dampened by new oak at present, but great presence in the glass—just fills it! Richly concentrated without appearing to be particularly full; perfectly fresh acidity, and, again, particularly fine tannins; a penetrating, crisply ripe cherry-fruit flavor; a spicy, mouth-coating, slightly more muscular expression of the grape and terroir, with more density, penetration, and a faintly gamey suggestion, hinting at the classic DRC magic to come. Wonderfully scented persistence. Less immediate charm than the Echézeaux, more long-term sinew and structure. Great Grands Echézeaux. 2018–35+.17.5/18
