Simon Field | Intriguing, garnet, amber, russet, a festival of color; the aromatic behind it is attractive, too. Raspberries long overdue, a hint of syrup and verbena, wild strawberry and pine, fennel and wood smoke, aniseed and long-extinguished aspiration; an evocative recollection of a year that wasn’t quite to be, a tricky year within the political spectrum, a year of forgotten industry and compromise... But not in this case. | 92
Andrew Jefford | Very light and clear, with russet-garnet hues at the center but tailing off swiftly at the meniscus. Sweet, plummy fruits on the nose; a little earthy wealth behind. This is the best of the three 1975s we are looking at, thanks to the fact that there is a little earthy wealth and depth on the palate to try to balance out that sweetness; there is no spirit showing yet, it is a little drier than the other two, and there is some density and tenacity behind the sweetness—but the only reason for buying it would be if you are born in 1975. There are many better Vintage Ports than this from more recent vintages. | 87
Richard Mayson | The deepest and most youthful-looking of the three ’75s; slightly lifted on the nose, with gentle fruit underlying, fully mature, soft, and easy to drink, with firm, reasonably lithe tannins leading onto an attractive, mid-weight, grippy finish, with some freshness, depth, and concentration underlying. Rather good for this vintage. | 91
