Michael Schuster | I wonder why so much Merlot this year? Very sweetly ripe blackberry and cassis to smell; full-bodied, generous wine, fresh in acidity, finely firm in tannin; a mass of sweetly, juicily ripe fruit, mouthcoating, ample for Margaux, both slightly alcohol-warm and oak-dry in feel; reflective this year, perhaps more of the heat of the year and of the winemaking style than of its Margaux origin; plenty of flavor, with clear complexity and good length, but with its power to the fore rather than its potential terroir finesse. Good wine, yes. Typical Margaux?? 2029–50+.
