Michel Bettane and Thierry Desseauve: Youthful notes of raspberry coulis rather than the more developed liquorice scents exhibited by the other Haut-Médocs. Long, but not as vinous as most of the third growths. As usual, this wine does not taste its best when newborn, needing the first year of life to develop its tremendous finesse, so next year’s score could well be higher. 15
Margaret Rand: The tannins are mercifully under control, and while there’s not huge concentration, the fruit is supple and perfumed. 14.5
Michael Schuster: Dark red. Ripe, gently oaky and subtly gravelly to smell. Light to medium-full, fresh and finely tannic. Long, ripe, delicate, close-grained, scented flavour within the fine, dry tannin. Refined, discreet, almost Burgundian cherry-fresh fruit. Delicious in a lighter, Margauxesque style. Refreshing, fragrant claret – the antithesis of the strong, black, super-ripe, oaky, new-wave style – and none the worse for that! Probably very good value, if this is a style you like, which I do. 15.5/16v
