Simon Larkin : Aromatic show greater complexity than the ’97 [Vigna Colonnello]; scented, dusky red fruits. The palate reveals very fine quality - a sense of harmony and symmetry, very fine-grained tannins adding to a silky textual quality. The cherry, kirsch-like fruit is well expressed, with tremendous purity and an underlying mineral aspect. The finish is long, lingering, bewitching. Already so harmonious now, this should become a truly fine example in time. 18.5
Nicolas Belfrage: More happening on the nose than on the '97, but of similar style - touch of Bovril, some spice, some kirsch. Less rich but more complex than the ’97, firm acid-tannin base on which to rest fruit of good character, sour cherry and plum. Acidity will hold this wine longer than its partner. Will never be charming, but has potential to develop in an interesting way. 16
