Michael Schuster: Hot, dry summer, wet and stormy September, tricky late ripening. Small grapes, thick skins, abundant tannin. A fully mature brick-rimmed red; a light, fresh, earthy, red-fruit Cabernet nose that is still tight and relatively dumb to smell, even at three decades; medium-full, “mellowed” in a way, but with a firm acidity and a light but dry, still grippy tannin. Overall rather austere, of moderate scope and length, and mostly, I would think, only for serious lovers of old-fashioned chewy claret. For my taste it’s not much fun. Like many 1986 Médocs, there is something curmudgeonly about this, and that’s not going to change! Drink or hold, it’s unlikely to make much difference.
