Michael Edwards: Some critics wrote off ’98 as a vintage, conscious of some rot in the Pinot Noir and the tendency of the wines to age rapidly. But selection was everything this year, and Deutz did a good job, doubtless waiting for the return of good weather at harvest end. A fine combination of rich fruit from the heatwave August and racy, athletic acidity from the cool, lightly rainy September. Fresh savoriness checks opulence. Holding better than feared.
