BUY THE WINE

Michael Schuster: Very dark mahogany; a fantastic bouquet of cassis and caramel; at nearly 50, still a wonderfully balanced wine: remarkably fresh, elegant, fine-textured and harmonious; long, sweet, and subtle in flavor, and with a quite lovely aftertaste. A wine of considerable power but also a particularly stylish beauty, with, in this instance, less of the slightly tar-like character of today’s 1961. Perfect now but, as with the 1961, many years of pleasure to give the privileged drinkers. Two remarkable clarets. Which one prefers, if one is lucky enough to savor them together, will be a question of the bottles on the day. 19+
