Domaine Trapet Alsace Grand Cru Schlossberg Riesling 2020 (14% ABV) – 87
SR | This 2020 Schlossberg Riesling opens quite animal and untamed on the nose, but is clear, elegant, and fresh behind these reductive yeasty layers. Lush and elegant on the palate, this is a balanced, filigreed, and rather gentle Schlossberg, with a stringent tannin and mineral acidity complex that closes the wine even further at this stage. A promising yet still astringent Schlossberg, not in the mood to celebrate its class today, unfortunately—hence a more reserved score than it probably deserves. Tasted from two different bottles. 90
AJ | Very pale; almost silver-green. The first disappointing aroma after nine other Schlossberg Rieslings; it lacks some purity and has strange, yeasty-biscuity notes and an animal touch. We will try a second bottle. Bottle 2: A better aroma for me, without the slightly worrying animal touch. It is still a bit confined and lacks fruited precision, however. Relatively straightforward on the palate, and, for me, this is not up to grand cru standard, without the requisite precision, aromatic focus, or depth of fruit. Perfectly drinkable Riesling, nonetheless, of attractively restrained style. 85
AR | A pale bright lemony green in color, this is initially perfumed, with the right notes of citrus, floral blossom, and cardamom spice in the right order, and while the fruit is bright and streaked with acidity, it's a tad soft, lacks a little weight, and that extra dimension of fruit after the initially pleasing impression. 86
