Nicolas Belfrage: Mixed. Deep, almost opaque. Flowery nose with some woodsmoke. Very rich, layered palate, with perfectly managed tannins and good balancing acidity. No expense has been spared in the making of this wine; if it has a fault, it is that it is too correct. Drink 2015+. 17
Andrew Jefford: Saturated dense black to deep garnet at rim. Lots of aromatic wealth, yet the style is rather dry and raisiny, cereal and grain, resin and twig; lacks fresh-fruit resonance. Dense, deep, grippy—stupendous tannins, actually!— but the overall effect is rather harsh, since those tannins are paired with relatively cool, acidic, challenging fruit. Like sword swallowing, with extra tannin. I admire enormously whoever has made this wine, since it is precise, cleanly defined, and concentrated, and immense care has been taken with it, but my feeling is that it just isn’t quite warm enough a site to make comfortable Barolo. Of course, comfort isn’t everything, and (as a tannin freak) I’d still like to drink it, albeit wishing that the acidity levels were a little lower. 16.5
Franco Ziliani: Deep color. Bouquet not clean, with some sweet vanilla notes without great concentration or energy. Simple on the palate, the tannins are dry and bitter, and the wine lacks balance, harmony, and elegance. I don’t think it will improve or come into balance. 14.5
