Unlike the unlikely eponymous etymological combination of vin and sobre, the blending of Syrah and Grenache is harmonious indeed in this, the most northerly of the southern villages. The Syrah is vinified in large oak vats, whereas the Grenache, more oxidative of temperament, is protected by stainless steel. As so often over the past few years, the altitude of Vinsobres is key to the definition of the aroma, most of it from the darker end of the fruit spectrum, and the structure framed by herbs and a touch of licorice. Sophisticated, chalky tannins, and impressive length—a style that is as digeste as it is approachable. | 89
