Simon Field: Deep mahogany color; nose suitably caramelized. Palate very broad and sweet—rich in a slightly ostentatious fashion, but this is a wealth with an impressive foundation, and one that will continue to appreciate. 17

Richard Mayson: Deep red-mahogany color, with a thin olive-green rim. Pungent but rather ill defined and soupy in style. An admirable old wine with fruit-driven richness and sweetness but a lack of finesse. 15

Margaret Rand: Lovely, powdery, coffee nose. Dark and rich, almost burnt, a bit raisiny. Tremendously lively for a 40-year-old; powerful and beefy. Enormous length. 17
