Jasper Morris: A very small, late harvest in hot conditions. Young vines in the Clos after the 1930s’ replanting program. This showed a much fuller color than its predecessors, with thick, glycerol legs running down the side of the glass. A whiff of volatility and some caramelized oak made up a slightly bizarre nose. Fortunately these aspects soon began to clear, leaving a brutally powerful wine behind, without the exceptional finesse of the ’59 or ’62. Thick, rich, dark-red fruit, freshening up a little in the glass. Impressive, but lacks the exceptional class of the greatest wines.
