Nicolas Belfrage: Distinctly lighter in color than most. Attractive herbal-floral nose, which calls the drinker in. Surprisingly juicy and “drinking-now” for a Riserva, already delicious, with its charming acid-fruit balance, but there must be a questionmark over its durability. Drink now. 89
Stephen Brook: Fairly deep red. Very ripe red-fruits nose, with some boiled-sweets tones that give it a confected character. Supple attack, sweet and rounded, pretty rather than muscular. The delicacy is attractive but it lacks some force and drive, and I don’t detect much structure or complexity. The overripeness and slight jamminess are worrying, though there’s enough acidity to carry the wine through to its finish. Moderate length. 85
Andrew Jefford: Paler than its peers, with some early bricking. Already into (you’d say) maturity on the nose; it smells at least five years older than most of its peers in this tasting. But lots of fun to smell! Dry plum and dry thatch. Smooth, soft, open, tangy, and long, with almost no palpable tannin. It’s perhaps hard to mark such a very different style, but in terms of overall grandeur I don’t feel that this is really a match for the best of its peers. However if you want a Brunello Riserva from this tasting to drink tonight, this may be the one to go for. 82
