World’s Best Wine Lists 2021: Global winners

By David Williams

Establishments from New York City dominated the top prizes at the World’s Best Wine Lists 2021, heading a field of some of the world’s best restaurants, bars, and hotels as the results of the world’s leading wine service awards were announced on Monday night.

Representatives from the world’s finest wine-led restaurants, bars, and hotels gathered around their computer screens on Monday night as the global winners of the World’s Best Wine Lists 2021 awards were announced in an online ceremony broadcast from London.

The 20 categories in the main competition featured winners from ten countries, and three continents, reiterating the truly global spread of the competition.

But it was a particularly good night for New York City, with the much-loved wine bar—and serial WBWL success story—Terroir Tribeca taking the Wine List of the Year and Eleven Madison Park taking the Champions’ League Best Overall Wine List, meaning the city took the two biggest prizes on the night.

Establishments from New York also came out top in a further four categories, with another win for Terroir Tribeca (Most Original Wine List) and awards for Wallsé (Best Regional Wine List Outside its region), Contento (Best Micro Wine List), and Temperance Wine Bar (Best New Wine List).

Other American winners in what was another strong year for the USA in the competition included Washington DC’s Kinship (Best Medium-Size Wine List) and Seattle’s Wild Ginger (Best Value Wine List).

It was a good night, too, for Australasia, with Australia and New Zealand providing two category winners apiece: Wickens at Royal Mail Hotel, Dunkeld, Victoria (Best Long Wine List) and Charred Kitchen & Bar, Orange, New South Wales (Best Spirits List) from Australia; and Cocoro in Ponsonby (Best Short Wine List) and The Ortega Fish Shack in Mount Victoria from New Zealand.

Europe’s successes meanwhile were neatly divided with a top award apiece to: the UK (sketch Lecture Room & Library, London—Best By-the-Glass List with Coravin®); Italy (Antica Bottega del Vino, Verona—Best Regional Wine List in its region sponsored by Altair); France (Domaine Les Crayères, Reims—Best Champagne & Sparkling Wine List sponsored by Accolade Wines); Spain (Atrio, Cáceres, Spain—Best Dessert & Fortified Wine List sponsored by Taylor’s Port); Switzerland (The Chedi, AndermattBest Sake List outside Japan); The Netherlands (Bubbles & Wines, Amsterdam—Best Wine Bar List); Portugal (The Yeatman, Porto—Best Hotel Wine List); and Sweden (Grand Hôtel, Stockholm—Best-Designed Wine List).

Introducing the presentation from London, Neil Beckett, Chairman of the World’s Best Wine Lists judging panel and Editor of The World of Fine Wine, hoped the event would help raise spirits after another difficult year for the hospitality sector.

“In another year that has seen so many sad losses, it’s all the more inspiring and uplifting to see how many establishments of all kinds, all around the world, have managed to adapt and to survive, and whose wine offerings—representing so much accumulated experience, expertise, promise, pleasure, and value—should help them, and all of us, look forward to better times,” Beckett said.
