Bruce Schoenfeld: Considering that the wet, chilly growing season may have been the worst of the ’80s, this is an admirable effort. Perhaps because the fruit struggled to ripen, this vintage shows the proximity to the eucalyptus trees more than any other. The mintiness is not unappealing, though, especially coupled with the firmness and freshness—almost an aromatic lift—that would, again, take me to Margaret River before I thought of Napa. The alcohol level is 13.1%, the start of the cult of hang-time and a creep toward (and, ultimately, past) 15% ABV that would mar Napa Cabernets in the decades that followed. Yet in this instance, the wine seems perfectly balanced, probably because the summer was so cool and the grapes ripened so evenly. Not the best wine in the collection, but one of the more interesting.
