Simon Field | Light evanescence, the lightest of the 1980s by some way; russet and sepia; a long day closes. Nose lifted, red berries left to long to macerate; the rose garden at dusk. The palate is soft, short, surprisingly febrile; nostalgia for old-fashioned winemaking will only get you so far, and this one seems hollow and starting to tire. Tasting a few minutes later is instructive, because it appears invigorated, far from robust for sure, but its more subtle nuances are starting to surface. Patience rewarded, it seems, and this might work well with a postprandial Havana.... | 86
Andrew Jefford | A much, much paler wine than its peers: old tawny, really. Completely translucent and garnet- russet in hue. It smells Porty and not spirity on the nose, but the aromas are rather soft in contour and unfocused: sweet plum, lightly fleshy, but little more. On the palate, this is smooth, gentle, open, refined, harmonious, and fully aged. Very pleasant Port, which does indeed have a Vintage fullness and amplitude in terms of its fruits—but hard to believe that it comes from the same vintage as [Warre’s 1980]. Drink up. | 88
Richard Mayson | Pale (the palest of the 1980s) pink-tinged tawny in color; open, vaguely savory, and a hint of nutty tawny character on the nose, more secondary than primary in style; soft, mellow, and rather hollow, a dusting of peppery tannin leading to a firm, surprisingly fresh finish, where the fruit appears and lasts. Spirit shows through. Quite enjoyable overall but drink soon. | 84
