Roy Hersh: Unquestionably a modern-day classic and one of my favorite post-1994 bottlings of Nacional. An impenetrable inky optic, by far the darkest Port of the first flight. Intensely fresh bouquet of rock rose, blackcurrant, and fig scents. Massive primary purple fruit at 20 years old, exquisitely approachable today, yet edgy. Ripe plum and currant nuances, modest acidity, and soft but omnipresent underlying tannins prove the 1997 is in possession of a long and bright future. A remarkably enduring finish was infused with gobs of briary berry and cocoa flavors. Cellar until ready, somewhere after the middle of the century.
