BUY THE WINE

Nicolas Belfrage: Medium deep, with a slightly advanced rim. The nose is a bit flat and the palate is gritty and grainy, tending to overripe. This is a good example of a wine whose maker thought “Riserva” means more power. It’s powerful alright, but not much fun to drink. 85

Stephen Brook: Deep to very deep red. Sweet, opulent berry fruit on the nose, with considerable purity and finesse. Rich and suave, concentrated and dense, with hefty tannins beneath the surface. But the excellent fruit quality is undermined by the alcoholic burn, which robs the wine of balance. Long, charred, but charmless finish. 85

Andrew Jefford: Deep black-red. An excellent aromatic profile: rounded, harmonious, and deep, yet very attractive, too; not focused, but with a glowing charm to it. (And then a touch of farmyard, to stop you taking the charm too much at face value.) On the palate, you’ll find a surprisingly concentrated, dense, tannically prolific wine with superb ripeness and harmony; succulent (despite the tannin). In flavor terms, we’re almost in chocolate territory, yet that gives the wrong impression; there is nothing sweet here, thanks to the extractive resolution. Super Brunello Riserva, held back from an outstanding score only by that almost affronting farmy note on the aroma. 89
