Stephen Brook | There’s a slight earthiness on the nose that detracts from the robust cherry and blackberry fruit, but at least the fruit is fully in evidence. Rich and broad, this has an appealing fleshiness and weight of fruit. It’s concentrated and dense, and there’s ample energy and force. Nor are the tannins too overt or aggressive. Quite an old-fashioned style, with the emphasis on power rather than elegance, but none the worse for that. Long if slightly charred finish. | 93
Andrew Jefford | Deep, dark black-red though translucent. Sweet, spicy compote, bobbing with cinnamon sticks and cloves. Instant appeal—yet a little bit simple. Soft, sweet, open, toothsome: a disarming, simple charm. A bit better than quaffing, and the wealth of fruit will carry the wine forward for a few years, but this doesn’t have the aromatic refinement of the best of its peers. | 84
Michael Palij | Burned aromas of barley sugar, toffee, caramel, coffee, and charred vegetables suggest the product of a hot vintage (which it was not) and a loose policy regarding managing the fruit in the winery. Oak aromas of vanilla and butterscotch allied to swingeing tannins and mordant acidity create an angular palate with little fruit to redeem it. | 85
