World’s Best Wine Lists 2022: Global winners announced

The World of Fine Wine is pleased to announce the global winners of the World’s Best Wine Lists Awards 2022, with Champagne’s Domaine Les Crayères and NYC’s Eleven Madison Park taking the two top prizes.

Widely regarded as the finest restaurant in the Champagne region, Domaine Les Crayères became the first French establishment in the history of the prestigious annual awards to take home the top Wine List of the Year prize.

The Reims-based hotel and restaurant, which was also named The World’s Best Champagne and Sparkling Wine List, was joined on the podium in London by one of the USA’s most celebrated restaurants, with NYC’s Eleven Madison Park retaining its Best Overall Wine List title in the World’s Best Wine Lists Champions’ League, reserved exclusively for past Wine List of the Year winners.

A double for Guincho a Galera

Macau’s Guincho a Galera also had an excellent night, picking up two awards (World’s Best Long Wine List and World’s Best Dessert and Fortified Wine List), while the USA was once again the dominant country, with wins for Boulder, Colorado’s Frasca Food and Wine (Best Medium-Sized Wine List), NYC’s Temperance Wine Bar (Best By-the-Glass Wine List (without Coravin®), The Turtle Enoteca in Brownwood, Texas (Best-Value Wine List), and Wit and Wisdom (Best New Restaurant Wine List) in the main competition.

American establishments also accounted for three of the five outright Champions’ League category winners, with Portland’s Pix Pâtisserie, Portland (Champions’ League Champagne and Sparkling Wine List of the Year) and The Barn at Blackberry Farm in Walland, Tennessee (Champions’ League Spirits List of the Year) joining overall winner Eleven Madison Park, while NYC’s Terroir Tribeca shared the Champions’ League By-the-Glass Wine List of the Year with Park Hotel in Vossevangen, Norway.

But this was a night in which the truly international spread of the World’s Best Wine Lists was recognized, too, with well-deserved wins for establishments in Australia, Austria, Italy, Norway, Sweden, and the UK.

World’s Best Wine Lists: Looking to better times

At the awards presentation in London, Neil Beckett, editor of The World of Fine Wine and chairman of the World’s Best Wine Lists judging panel, acknowledged that this has not been an easy year for restaurants anywhere in the world.

“We are all acutely conscious that it has been another desperately difficult year for the hospitality industry,” Beckett said.

“Covid restrictions have gradually been lifting, but staff shortages and spiralling costs continue to make for a very harsh environment. Our hearts go out to all those in the sector who have struggled and who are still suffering.

“In another year that has seen so many more sad losses, it is all the more inspiring and uplifting to find how many establishments of all kinds have managed to adapt and to survive, and whose wine offerings—representing so much accumulated experience, expertise, promise, pleasure, and value—should help them, and all of us, look forward to better times,” Beckett added.

The World’s Best Wine Lists is a global awards program created in 2014 by the multi-award-winning publication The World of Fine Wine.

Judged according to a rigorous protocol by independent, international panels of leading professionals, including World Champion Sommeliers, Master Sommeliers, Masters of Wine, and highly respected wine writers, it is the first awards program to acknowledge the crucial importance of a good wine selection—regardless of size—in the modern dining experience all round the world.
